George Johnson crashed the R&B scene with his brother Louis in the mid-1970s as the Quincy Jones-produced Brothers Johnson, unfurling one hit after another, and riding the top of the funk wave into the mid-1980s.  Prime movers of the “uptown” sophisticated funk, their music offered a rich and fascinating blend of styles and sensibilities, from hardcore groove-slapping funk to jazz-inflected melodic escapades.
Besides his prolific career as the duo’s lead singer, co-songwriter, and guitar player, Johnson has also played with prominent artists, from Billy Preston and Quincy Jones to Larry Graham, Herbie Hancock, Steve Arrington, and George Clinton.
